Some of my favorite childhood memories take me back to our family kitchen. I can see my father improvising a rich chocolate mousse for my sweet sixteen party. And when I listen to “Crocodile Rock” and “Honky Tonk Woman” as I work at my desk, I’m taken back to youthful evenings cleaning up after dinner with my mother and sister, bopping along to those very same songs.
So much of our life happens in the kitchen--the ones we grew up in and the ones we own today. Graduations are preceded by hundreds of math problems worked out on a chair, a stool, a countertop, a table. A lifetime of holiday meals are prepared in crowded ovens and cast iron skillets, while extended families catch up on the seasons between celebrations.
The changes in our kitchens through the decades have been designed to enhance these gatherings and simplify our daily chores. New layout ideas take down the walls between cook and guests and reduce steps between task and completion. New technologies make preparing meals and cleaning up afterward easier, more eco-friendly, and, thankfully, faster. (My stepdaughter doesn’t have to roll the dishwasher to the sink and hook its hose to the faucet to run it as I did growing up!) New products provide greater durability, safety, and eco-friendly benefits.
Every chapter features a New Vision sidebar, which provides information and photographs on some of the smartest, most useful advances in the kitchen industry in recent years--think appliances that do the work of two or three in the space of one and lights that last 20 years and cut your electric bills. In these pages, you’ll find both new approaches to planning your space and new resources for equipping it.
Not everything in your new kitchen needs to be new either. So many remodels preserve existing elements like flooring and appliances or phase in new ones over time, as need and budgets dictate. For projects like these, I’ve included a section in each chapter called Working with What You Have. These sidebars are designed to help you update your kitchen in a way that makes sense for both that space as well as the surrounding rooms.
Enhancing your kitchen is an investment in your home, and this book is designed to make that investment as smart and stylish as possible. So before you plan an entirely new—or newly improved—kitchen, read this book to help guide your choices for your home and your family, so that your investment of time and money will be worth it in the end.
