About the Author

Intro

I’ve always been a doer. i need to make things with my hands_—”stitches, food, gardens, music_—”and so, for me, Sweet Shawlettes has been a dream project. From little more than a necklace to more substantial capelets, cowls, collars, furbelows, and fichus, the shawlette provides the ultimate opportunity to explore shape, stitch, color, and texture_—”all without the commitment a larger piece demands. And, as many use small quantities of yarn, these stash-busting designs are terrific for last-minute handmade gifts. If you, like me, have a tendency to buy tiny amounts of luxury yarns you just can’t resist, but then wonder what on earth to do with them, well, problem solved_—”you’ll find many options in Sweet Shawlettes!

My work as a handknit designer and, more recently, as tour host for adventurous knitters and fiber lovers involves a lot of travel. The portable shawlette is my ideal companion, something to occupy my needles whether exploring a Welsh mountain or a Moroccan kasbah. Since often there is no big deal about gauge_—”within reason of course_—”and sizing is less important, shawlettes also are perfect for new knitters.

With the 25 designs in this collection, a wonderful voyage of discovery started to unfold for me. I’ve arranged the designs into four chapters, each reflecting a different mood. In Country, you’ll find shawlettes that look to nature for inspiration and use combinations of intarsia, lace, cables, and appliqu’©. Couture is pure style, with in-your-face block color, shadow-knit stripes, and bold entrelac_—”guaranteed to get you noticed! Folk explores the nuts and bolts of the knitting tradition: Fair Isle, cables, lace, plaid, and patchwork, including new takes on old techniques, a lace M’_bius, and a denim gansey design. Vintage is an ode to fabulous fashion through the ages_—”from Elizabethan neck ruffs and Wuthering Heights shawls, through the decadent style of Lord Byron, to the extravagant glitz and glamour of the 1950s screen goddesses.

Whether you are new to knitting or a lifelong devotee, the patterns in this book provide an opportunity to learn something new and create unique, beautiful designs.

The Importance of Fiber
Yarn is hugely important in any pattern. It’s the vehicle for showcasing the stitches that we spend so long creating, so it has to be right for the job. I’ve had such fun picking the perfect fiber for each of these projects. The neck is a highly sensual area, so it’s imperative that the yarn is soft and sumptuous, yet holds the correct shape and does the stitch justice. Some yarns, like cashmere, are beautiful enough in themselves and need only a stylish shape to create a wonderful design. Others with crisp stitch definition, such as cotton and linen, cry out for a cable or sculptured stitch, whilst painterly random-dyed yarns can effortlessly introduce exquisite color into a design.

The yarns I’ve chosen for this book reflect the unique nature of each design_—”some shawlettes work best with natural fibers, others with luxurious blends, and still others can take pretty much any yarn you care to cast on. I’ve tried to use yarns easily available through local yarn shops and online, but to make substitutions easy, I’ve included a fiber list on p. 122 and a Standard Yarn Weight System on p. 124 at the back
of the book.

Shawlettes also provide the perfect opportunity to get creative with buttons, buckles, beads, and closures. These can make or break a project, so make sure you choose yours carefully. I love vintage style, so I try to recycle costume jewelry and yard sale treasures. After all, a shawlette featuring buttons from your grandmother’s favorite jacket or an heirloom brooch is meaningful beyond just the stitchwork. Of course there are gorgeous new fasteners to be had, but remember that often the perfect bead, button, or buckle can be closer than you might think.

Knits have never been more important in the world of fashion. Beautifully crafted, sophisticated pieces expressing the wearer’s personality represent the contemporary face of handknits. I hope this book will inspire you to knit my sweet shawlettes, either to flaunt flamboyantly or gift generously to friends and family.
